For this assignment, I decided to examine two companies: Accounting Principals and Hurricane Electric.
COMPANY #1 -ACCOUNTING PRINCIPALS
The first company I examined was Accounting Principals. The company is based in Santa Clara, CA, and they are an industry leader in securities and investment banking. Generally, they seek entry level and registered Sales Assistants to work with Financial Consultants in their Retail Branch network. They currently have over 11,000 Financial Consultants servicing individuals and corporations in the United States and abroad. Their managers average more than eleven years in the professional services industry, and their team has experience with Fortune 1000 companies and the largest public accounting firms. Some of the industries they serve include the following: Advertising, Manufacturing, Publishing, Consulting, Health Care, and Biotechnology.
One position available is for a Brokerage Sales Assistant. The job duties include interfacing with clients, supporting Financial Consultants with daily operations (processing transactions, answering questions, providing follow-up with clients and operations staff, etc.), customer service and general administrative duties. They are seeking the following qualifications: candidates who possess strong customer service skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, a high energy level, a minimum of a high school degree or equivalent, proficiency in MS Word and brokerage industry experience a plus. Specifically, they are seeking candidates who can work in a fast paced, teamwork-oriented office, and who are detail oriented and dynamic. Compensation depends on experience, but includes base salary and quarterly bonuses that are determined by the individual Financial Consultants.
COMPANY #2 - HURRICANE ELECTRIC
Hurricane Electric Internet Services is a rapidly growing, well established, profitable, business ISP with facilities in San Jose and Fremont, CA. The company is private and has an open work atmosphere, and they strongly encourage their employees to pursue their field of interest in the scope of their business.
A position for an Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable is available at Hurricane Electric's Fremont facility. They are seeking an individual who is detailed oriented and organized. They are seeking an applicant who has experience with Accounts Payable/Accounts receivable and who possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills. The applicant must be computer literate and must have knowledge of MS Excel and Quick books. The applicant must be familiar with the Internet and E-mail. Duties include replying to billing/accounting inquires via e-mail and phone. Individual will handle collections on past due accounts, will review and process invoices, and will prepare invoice payments and reply to vendor inquiries.
Based on the information I've gathered, I find the first company more appealing. I feel this way for two distinct reasons. Firstly, after examining Accounting Principals' web page, I realized that they were a much larger company. This is important to me because I feel that larger companies (for the most part) are more stable. Secondly, I find Accounting Principals more attractive than Hurricane Electric because it is an accounting firm. Hurricane Electric, on the other hand, is an Internet Service Provider. I would rather be employed by a company whose primary focus is accounting rather than by a company whose focus is the Internet.
