You will write a total of twenty response papers this semester, one for each reading. Response papers should be submitted the day we cover the particular reading (unfortunately, I do NOT accept late response papers). Each response paper should include answers to the following questions:

1) What is the point-of-view in the story (first, second, or third person)?

2) Is the story in present tense or past tense?

3) Is the narrator the story's central character or does she function primarily as an observer of the story's characters and action?

4) Where and when does the story take place? How does the author establish the setting? Through action? Through description of the characters? Through dialogue? Is there any symbolic significance to the setting?

5) How much dialogue is there in the story? What purposes does the dialogue serve?
When does the author use summary rather than dialogue?

6) What is the story's plot? More specifically: What is the central conflict? When and how is that conflict introduced? How is the conflict developed?

7) Where does the story reach its climax? Is the conflict resolved and, if so, how is that resolution conveyed to the reader? Is there any ambiguity to the story's resolution?

8) How has the author structured the story? Does the action move forward in a straight line? Are there flashbacks in the story and, if so, what function do those flashbacks serve? Does the author ever leap forward in time or interrupt the chronological progression of the story in any way?

9) What images, ideas, or phrases reoccur in the story? Do any of the characters have attributes that serve as symbols? Does the story make use of symbols? If so, do the symbols carry or merely reinforce the meaning of the story?

10) Does the story have a theme? What is the story's theme? Are there other themes suggested as well? How fully is the theme developed in the course of the story? How apparent is the theme when one first reads the story? Where and how does that theme become most apparent?

12) How didactic is the story -- that is, to what extent does the story seem to offer a lesson, to instruct the reader regarding morality? Is the author interested in simply presenting the complexity of a particular circumstance or emotional state, or does he suggest how one should and shouldn't behave?
